Most household and business items store perfectly well, but a few things are unsafe or will spoil. Keeping them out protects your belongings and everyone else’s.
Keep these out
- Flammable or hazardous items: fuel, gas bottles, paint thinners, chemicals, fireworks and ammunition
- Food and perishables: they attract pests and go off
- Anything alive: plants and animals
- Wet or damp items: they cause mould that spreads to everything else
- Illegal or stolen goods
Think twice about these
- Irreplaceable items: passports, important documents, cash and precious jewellery are safer at home or in a safe deposit box
- Vehicles and machinery: drain fuel where possible and disconnect batteries, and ask us first
- Electronics: pack them in their original boxes if you have them, and keep them off the floor
Check your insurance
Your belongings stay your responsibility while they’re in storage. Check whether your home contents insurance covers items kept off-site, or ask your insurer about storage cover.
Your storage agreement sets out exactly what can and can’t be stored. If you’re unsure about something, just ask us before you bring it in.
