A little planning before you pack makes your things easier to find later and keeps them in better condition while they’re stored.
Boxes and packing
- Use strong boxes in two or three standard sizes. They stack neatly and safely.
- Put heavy items in small boxes and light items in large ones.
- Fill gaps with paper or towels so boxes don’t crush when stacked.
- Label each box on the side, not just the top, so you can read it when it’s stacked.
- Keep a simple list or take photos of what’s in each box.
Furniture and appliances
- Take legs off tables and dismantle bed frames. Keep screws in a labelled bag taped to the piece.
- Clean and fully dry fridges and washing machines, and leave the doors slightly open.
- Cover furniture with old sheets or furniture blankets rather than sealed plastic, which can trap moisture.
Handling Queensland humidity
- Make sure everything is completely dry before it goes in.
- Raise items off the floor on pallets or timber slats.
- Add moisture absorbers, particularly for longer stays over summer.
- Leave a small gap between your things and the walls for airflow.
Loading the unit
- Put the things you’ll need least at the back and the things you’ll need most near the door.
- Stack heavy boxes at the bottom and lighter ones on top.
- Leave a walkway so you can get to everything.
All our units are drive-up, so you can back your car or trailer right to the door and load straight in.
